Five years after Brexit and with an election looming, Britain’s political institutions are held in contempt by its people. Its major political traditions are plainly exhausted. The Union with Scotland and Northern Ireland is in doubt. Much of the UK’s stagnant economy is foreign-owned. Its imperial past is disgraced. Immigration is at unprecedented levels. Identity conflicts proliferate. Is a national politics possible in such circumstances?
